Sefton remembers those who died
During the immediate years that followed 1918, eleven civic war memorials commemorating the fallen and honouring the sacrifice made by those brave men and women, were built throughout the area we now know as Sefton.
The planning, funding, and construction of most of these striking edifices, including a school in Maghull, was overseen and co-ordinated by individual memorial committees. Funds were raised via grants and private/public subscription.
Each memorial is unique, its surrounding community’s way of commemorating the local war dead. Indeed today, the descendants of those named may still reside in the area.
The civic memorials are also a link with a community’s past, and provide the current generations with places to remember and pay respect to their forbears. They are silent sentinels, honouring a lost and heroic generation. Sefton’s civic memorials are also important sources of information. They are the gateway to learning about the people behind the names; gaining an understanding of the sacrifice that each individual made.
This website is designed to take us through this gateway and is dedicated to commemorating the Sefton fallen, as well as providing information about the memorials themselves.
