Formby's fallen Service men of World War Two

Formby’s War Memorial is located by the roundabout at the corner of Three Tuns Lane. Listed upon the memorial are the names of 68 heroic Service Personel who died in battle during WW2.

Some of the men have additional information about their lives and where they were born or lived before the war.

Joseph was killed whilst serving on the Lancastria. She was anchored  just outside St Nazaire virtually fully laden with troops. A German Ju88 bomber scored several hits on the ship, which caused her to roll over onto her port side, she sank in about twenty minutes. The precise number who died cannot be known, the Lancastria was carrying about 6000 people and at least 2000 are known to have perished.
